Wedding Fairs: The Do’s and Don’ts

(From A Wedding Cake Designer Who's Been There)

So whether you’re coming along specifically to taste wedding cake (always a good plan) or just to soak up ideas, here are my top do’s and don’ts for making the most of wedding fairs…

DO go in with a loose plan

Wedding fairs can be busy, exciting, and slightly overwhelming. Before you arrive, have a think about what you actually want to look for. Are you venue hunting? Still undecided on your wedding cake style? Looking for other  suppliers? A rough plan helps you avoid wandering around aimlessly and missing the stands that really matter to you.

DON’T feel pressured to book on the spot

This is a big one. Wedding fairs are designed to showcase suppliers, not to rush you into decisions. It’s absolutely okay to say, “We’re just gathering information for now.” Whether it’s a wedding cake maker or a photographer, the right supplier will be happy for you to take their details and get in touch later.

DO talk to suppliers (yes, really!)

I know it can feel awkward approaching stands, but please don’t be shy. We’re genuinely lovely, I promise. Chatting face-to-face gives you a feel for personality, style, and whether you’ll actually enjoy working together. This is especially important for things like your wedding cake, where design, flavour, and trust all matter.

DON’T overload yourself with freebies

It’s tempting to grab every leaflet, business card, and freebie going. But by the end of the day, they all blur into one big pile. Be selective. If you loved chatting to a wedding cake designer in Aberdeenshire or really connected with a supplier, keep their details somewhere safe and make a note of what you liked about them.

DO ask questions (there are no silly ones)

Wedding fairs are the perfect place to ask questions you didn’t even realise you had. From cake portions and delivery logistics to venue restrictions and setup times, this is where you can get real answers from real people who work weddings week in, week out across venues in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.

DON’T attend when you’re already exhausted

Wedding planning fatigue is real. Try to attend a fair when you’ve got the headspace to enjoy it. Grab a coffee, take breaks, and remember it’s meant to be fun. Cake samples help with this, obviously.

DO follow up afterwards

Once the fair is over, take time to look through the suppliers you connected with. If you met a wedding cake business you loved (like me!), send an enquiry while it’s still fresh in your mind. Wedding dates fill quickly, especially in peak season.

Wedding fairs are a brilliant way to meet trusted local suppliers, see styles in person, and start shaping your wedding vision. Go prepared, stay relaxed, and enjoy the process – and if cake is involved, even better!

If you spot me at a wedding fair in Aberdeen or Aberdeenshire, please come say hello. I’ll be the one encouraging you to eat more cake samples..
